Culture | Perspectives - workforce rights in the workplace | Interview with Alessa Rigal

In this video we talk about why it is important to respect workforce rights in the workplace and how leaders can make this work effectively. Alessa Rigal is an expert in business & human rights as well as responsible sourcing, focusing on a humanitarian approach. Over the last 12.5 years, she has worked in workers’ rights and international development spaces since arriving to the UK from San Francisco. She has built her career through roles within international NGO’s and consultancies including ethical auditing, leading her to her last role within a global produce supplier. In that time, she most notably spent 5 years with the Ethical Trading Initiative, working closely with companies, trade unions and NGO’s. She collaborated on programmes focused on improvement of workers’ rights in global supply chains initially across apparel and food and then exclusively in agriculture. Her work in agriculture over the last 6 years has been focused in addressing needs of vulnerable worker groups, working across Senior stakeholder groups and programme management. Her last role as Group Head of Human Rights & Ethics provided the opportunity to apply over a decade of experience into creating strategic human rights plans paired with an ambitious sustainability agenda. She is currently exploring what next on the horizon, centered in change and impact with workers’ rights and how they partner with environmental protection - developing a knowledge portfolio in sustainability. This level of engagement invites workshop participants to investigate different parts of our collective history, looking at recorded events through the lens of racism and relating it to what it means in today's world. The process was powerfully engaging and empowering; the results were amazing, heartfelt and life changing. The employees of this organisation experienced cultural transformation. In this episode Ishreen shares with you real case studies of the results of how people feel when they go through the process.
